What is safety net for balcony?
A balcony safety net is fundamentally different from a bird net, and confusing the two is dangerous. A bird net is designed to stop a 300-gram pigeon landing. A safety net has to arrest the weight of a child or a pet moving at speed. The mesh is heavier, the anchoring is load-rated, and there is no acceptable shortcut on either.
This is the service parents ask us for most often once a child starts walking, and the one cat owners ask for after a near-miss. In high-rise Delhi NCR apartments where balcony railings have wide gaps or a low top rail, it is the simplest way to make the space usable again.
Why the anchoring matters more than the mesh
Any net will look reassuring when it is new and tight. What determines whether it holds under sudden load is the fixing: how deep the anchor goes, what it goes into, and how many there are. We anchor into structural concrete wherever it is available and never rely on plaster, brick facing or a railing that is itself loose.
We also check the railing before we net it. There is no point fitting a safety net to a railing whose base plates have corroded — the net will hold and the railing will not. If we find that, we will tell you, and we would rather lose the job than fit a net that gives you false confidence.

What it is not is a substitute for supervision, and we would rather say that plainly. Treat it as a serious secondary safeguard, not a reason to leave a small child alone on a balcony.
Twine gauge, mesh strength and anchoring. A pigeon net stops a bird landing; a safety net has to arrest a falling body. They can look similar from a distance, which is exactly why some suppliers sell one as the other. Ask for the specification in writing.
Much less than people expect. The mesh is open at around 50 mm and the twine is thin relative to the aperture, so from inside the room your eye passes through it. It is considerably less obtrusive than a grill.
Yes, with a smaller aperture and particular attention to the perimeter. Cats exploit edges rather than the middle of a net, so the corners, the gap under the railing and the junction at the wall are where the work actually is. Tell us it is for a cat and we will specify accordingly.
Very little, but it should be looked at. We suggest checking tension and hardware once a year — a net that has gone slack, or an anchor that has begun to work loose, is exactly the kind of thing that goes unnoticed until it matters.
