What is bird spike?
Bird spikes are strips of blunt, upward-facing pins that make a narrow surface impossible to perch on. They do not injure birds — the pins are blunt and widely spaced, and the bird simply finds there is nowhere to put its feet.
Spikes solve a different problem from netting. A net closes an opening; spikes deny a landing surface. On a window ledge, a projecting beam, a shop sign or an ornamental parapet, there is no opening to close, so spikes are the correct tool.
Spikes or a net?
Use spikes when the problem is a surface birds land on: ledges, sills, parapet copings, signage tops, ducting runs, beams and the flat top of a split-AC outdoor unit. Use a net when the problem is a space birds enter: balconies, shafts, ducts, terraces.
The two are frequently combined. It is common to net a balcony and spike the external ledge below the window, because otherwise the birds simply relocate two feet down and the droppings continue.

Spikes are quoted per running foot, and the rate depends on pin material, strip width and how the strip is fixed. Ledges deeper than about six inches need two rows to be effective — a single row on a wide ledge leaves a landing strip behind it and is the most common reason spikes appear "not to work".

No. The pins are blunt-tipped and splayed apart, not sharp. Their purpose is to remove the flat surface a bird needs to settle on, so birds simply choose somewhere else. They are widely used precisely because they are non-lethal.
Barely. Fitted along a ledge or parapet, a spike strip reads as a thin line from ground level and is invisible from any distance. Polycarbonate-based spikes are less noticeable than full stainless ones on light-coloured buildings.
On smooth surfaces such as tile, metal, glass or a finished parapet we use a structural adhesive with no drilling at all. On rough masonry we screw-fix. We will tell you which method your surface needs at the survey.
Almost always because the ledge is wider than the strip. A four-inch strip on an eight-inch ledge leaves a comfortable perch behind it. Wide ledges need two or more rows so that no landable gap remains.
Yes, and it is one of the most requested jobs we do. The flat top of a split-AC outdoor unit is an ideal pigeon perch, and droppings there both corrode the casing and get drawn toward the fan. Spikes on the top surface solve it without affecting the unit.
